Bududa
Vocational Institute: Skills for Jobs
The Institute
primarily trains students to pass the Uganda National Education Board
(UNEB) certification exams in four disciplines:
- Bricklaying
and Concrete Practice
- Nursery
Teacher Training
- Tailoring
- Carpentry
BVI’s
mission is to produce well rounded students who can not only
acquire skills needed
for jobs, but skills and knowledge to improve their lives. In
addition to the core curriculums,
we provide courses
to
all the students in math, science,
English, computer training, health and life
skills. We focus particularly on providing services
and programs
to
women as we believe this is a critical way to help this community.
BVI
also offers a short computer course for members
of the community. With the institute being one of the few
places in this village with electricity, and one of the only places
in the
district offering these classes.
Students learn basic computer
skills including basic typing
and Office programs.
Children of Peace
This weekly program supports more than 150 orphans
and other
vulnerable children. This program is a safety net
for the children
and includes good food, classroom instruction,
arts programs (visual arts, drama and music)
as well as soccer and volleyball.
Visiting
volunteers supplement local
teachers who lead the activities. Donations from sponsors also
provide uniforms
and school supplies which are required for the children to
attend school. Some
sponsors
also pay
private school tuition when it is necessary – usually
because there is no place
for the child to live except
in a boarding
school.
