Under
the direction of Barbara Wybar, the Bududa Development Center sits
on a campus in rural Uganda, on the slopes of Mount Elgon, just a
few miles
from the border with Kenya. We operate two programs at present,
the Bududa Vocational Institute and the Children of Peace Program.
These programs
target the major challenges of this region– the plight of orphans and other vulnerable
children and the lack of education for teenagers and older adults,
particularly
women.
Our
Children of Peace Program serves the poorest children and orphans.
Frequently the orphans have lost parents to AIDS or malaria and have
been taken in by an aging grandparent or relative, or are being raised
by a sibling, often teenagers themselves. Our Children of Peace Program
provides a safety net to over 150 of these local children.
Our second program, the Bududa
Vocational Institute,
is a full-time school. The Institute teaches useful and practical skills
to older orphans,
teenagers, and women who have no means to support themselves. Most of
these students have had limited education, and without the Institute,
have no other opportunity. We now have a staff of 14 Ugandans and we
offer programs in tailoring, nursery teacher training, bricklaying and
masonry practice, as well as carpentry. In addition we offer short courses
in computer keyboarding, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and craft classes
for womens’ groups.
